U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Xenia, Ohio, in 1825. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1832-33) and served in the Ohio State Senate, (1838-39, 49). In 1853, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress, reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress and elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, engaged in agricultural pursuits and served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 94th Regiment Ohio Minutemen, Union Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he relocated to California and resided there until his death at age 65.
