Delaware Governor. After being educated in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, he went to work in his father's mill business William Lea & Sons and became its president in 1876. He also served as president of the Union National Bank, in 1888, vice president of the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company, was director of the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad, president of the Wilmington City Railway and president of the Equitable Guarantee Bank. Entering politics, in 1905, he was elected as a republican the 52nd Delaware Governor, serving until 1909. During his term, the monetary prerequisite for voting was eliminated, legislation was constituted that granted authorization on a new "Great Seal of the State of Delaware," and a bill was enacted that sanctioned a popular vote to decide on the question of implementing a program of advisory initiative and referendum. After leaving office, he retired from public service and resumed his previous business interests until his death.
