U.S. Congressman. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Western University in 1826, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1836-39) and United States District Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, (1841-44). In 1844, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Wilkins, reelected to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. After his term, he served as Attorney General of Pennsylvania, (1849-51). He died at age 45 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
