U.S. Congressman. Born in Avalon, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Allegheny College, in 1927 and from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1929. He was a high-school instructor at Coraopolis Pennsylvania, (1929-38) and a instructor at the Pittsburgh Academy Evening School in 1938. In 1939, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress, serving until 1941. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served on the staff of Senator James J. Davis in Pittsburgh and was Sheriff of Allegheny County, (1942-44). He was again elected in 1945, to the Seventy-ninth Congress and to the next thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 65 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
