US Senator. A practicing lawyer in Hamilton, Mississippi, he was a Judge of the Circuit Court of Mississippi in 1838 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate from Mississippi. He served less than a year. Following his Senate service, he was a Mississippi Supreme Court Judge from 1839 to 1842, Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi from 1860 to 1862, and a Circuit Court Judge from 1866 until his death later that year.
