U.S. Congressman. Educated as a physician, he served as a surgeon in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, during the War of 1812, was hospital surgeon on the staff of Major General Andrew Jackson, in the expedition against the Creek Indians, in 1814 and was a hospital surgeon on the staff of Major General William Carrol, in 1815. Entering politics, he was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives and elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving (1817-19). After leaving Congress, he engaged in the practice of medicine and was president of the State Medical Society of Tennessee, in 1840.
