US Senator. Vermont Chief Justice. Worked on family farm, attended public schools and St. Johnsbury Academy. Graduate, Dartmouth College, 1851. Teacher in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Principal, Chelsea and Craftsbury Academies 1851-56. Married Eliza Ann Carpenter of Waterford, November 22, 1852. Eight children: Caroline C., Eliza M., Helen M., Julia, Martha E., Edith Helen, Edward H., and Jonathan C. Married Helen Daggert after death of his first wife. Studied law in Chelsea office of former Congressman William Hebard, admitted to bar, commenced practice in St. Johnsbury, 1856. Treasurer, Passumpsic Savings Bank, 1858-68. Caledonia County State's Attorney, 1862-63. Vermont House, 1865-67. Member, State Board of Education, 1866-70. Vermont Council of Censors, 1869. Vermont Senate, 1870. Associate Justice, Vermont Supreme Court, 1870-90. Vermont Chief Justice, 1890-99. Appointed to US Senate to fill vacancy caused by Justin S. Morrill's death, serving January 11, 1899 to October 18, 1900. Chairman, Committee to Examine Branches of the Civil Service. Was not a candidate for election to full term. Chairman, Vermont Board of Railroad Commissioners, 1900-02. Retired to home in St. Johnsbury, where he resided until his death.
