He made his debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1937, but then played for the Chicago Cubs the rest of his career (1940 to 1944 and 1946 to 1947). However, he missed the Cubs' 1945 pennant-winning season because of military service. In 1941, the left-handed batter hit .272 in 140 games with 36 doubles and 85 runs batted in. He had another outstanding year in 1944, when he batted .304 in 117 games with eight homers and 74 RBIs. His career ledger read .267 with 110 doubles, 23 triples, 22 homers and 303 RBIs. He also was 52 for 192 as a pinch hitter, a respectable .271 average.
