Governor of Connecticut. As lieutenant governor, he was elevated to the governorship on March 7, 1948, after the unexpected death of Governor James L. McConaughy. He was unsuccessful in seeking a term in his own right that fall. After leaving office, he served on the Connecticut Superior Court from 1953 to 1965 and was an associate justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1965 to 1966.
