Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted as a private in the 60th New York Volunteer Infantry in August of 1861 and spent the next few months guarding the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Maryland. By 1865, he had gained the rank of colonel of his regiment. He participated in campaigns in Virginia and Maryland and was severely wounded at Chancellorsville. Beginning in February of 1864, he participated in all of the battles of General Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga to Raleigh. As assistant adjutant-general, he received the surrender of the city of Savannah from Mayor Arnold and was the first officer to enter that city at the head of his own regiment. At the conclusion of the war, he was breveted brigadier general "for gallant and meritorious services in the campaign under General Sherman, resulting in the fall of Atlanta." He later administered the Soldiers' Home in Albany, New York. In 1867, he moved to Bozeman in Montana territory to join his brother in the mercantile business.
