Eugene H. Wickstrom, professor of organ at Ohio University from 1960 to 1987, will be remembered as a master teacher and improviser at the organ by all of his former students. Mr. Wickstrom was born in Omaha, Nebraska and was the son of Hugo and Amy Granlund Wickstrom of San Diego, California. He began piano study at age five and then started organ study at age fourteen. He quickly acquired a tremendous technique and ability to improvise on hymn tunes at sight. He was a graduate of North High School in Omaha, Nebraska and then earned his AB degree with high honors and distinction in music from San Diego State University in 1948. He then began graduate study in sacred music at Union Theological Seminary in New York and earned his S.M.M. degree in 1952. While at Union Theological Seminary, he studied with Norman Coke-Jephcott, Clarence Dickinson, and Hugh Porter. He was also assistant to Coke-Jephcott at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he played the large Aeolian Skinner organ, restored and enlarged by the great organ builder G. Donald Harrison. After completing his S.M.M. degree, Mr. Wickstrom began teaching organ, theory, music history and appreciation classes at Bradford Junior College, Haverhill, Mass., which closed its doors in May 2000. From 1954 to 1960 he was organist and director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Haverhill, Mass., directed the Bradford college glee club, chapel choir and was director of the music program during his last three years there. After arriving in Athens, Ohio in 1960 to become its new instructor of organ, Mr. Wickstrom got involved with the choral programs and became the director of the University Chorus and University Singers. He traveled with his choirs all over Ohio, performing numerous concerts. During his later years at Ohio University he became heavy involved in teaching organ and creating new music appreciation classes. In the early 1980s he created a course called, ‘The History of Rock', which drew over a hundred students interested in that new course offering. For those of us who were fortunate to have studied organ with him, he left us with abundant appreciation for that instrument, especially the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Mr. Wickstrom's final church position was at the First United Methodist Church in Athens, Ohio, a block away from his teaching studio at Galbreath Chapel on the Ohio University campus. His memorial service was held at that same church and some of his former students paid tribute to him by performing some of his best loved organ works.
