Queen Maria Pia of Portugal was born Princess Maria Pia of Savoy on October 16th 1847 in Turin, Italy. She was the daughter of King Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy and Adelaide Habsburg-Lotharingen. She married in 1862 with Luis I, King of Portugal. She lived to see her son become King Carlos I of Portugal. Tragically, King Carlos and her eldest grandson Prince Luis Felipe were both murdered in Lisbon in 1908. Her other grandson Manuel became King of Portugal on the death of his father and elder brother and reigned until he was deposed without consent of the Portuguese people in an illegal military coup d'etat in 1910. Along with the rest of the royal family, Queen Maria Pia was forced to flee Portugal. She chose to live in Italy where she died at Stupinigi Castle near Turin on July 5th 1911. It is said that Queen Maria Pia died of a broken heart mourning for her murdered son and grandson and her beloved Portugal.
