Mark Grossman was the son of Samuel (1861-1929) and Dora Bryan ( - 1952) Grossman, for whom Grossman Hammock in Miami-Dade County, Florida, is named. In 1954, he opened a private park there called the Lake Chekika and Mineral Springs park. He sold it to the State of Florida in 1970 and the State then donated it to the federal government in 1990 as part of an addition to Everglades National Park.

MARK LAWRENCE GROSSMAN, passed away December 21, 1998, Born in Cleveland, Ohio, March 19, 1901, he graduated from Staunton Military Academy, Staunton, Virginia and attended Cleveland School of Law. During the Depression years he was a contractor for the U.S. government in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Many public and commercial buildings he built are still in use today, including the post office on St. Thomas which is now a national historic site. From the 1920s to the early 1970's he was a pioneer land developer and mover in flood control legislation in south Florida. He developed Grossman Hammock and Mineral Springs into a recreational area and campgrounds, while preserving the natural habitat and historic Indian grounds. It is now part of the Everglades National Park. In 1927 he married Josephine Mackey, and they lived most of their 62 years of marriage in Coral Gables, Florida. He moved to Houston to be near family in 1990. He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law; Helen and Norman Myers of Spring, Texas and Mary Jane and Bill Nester of Cincinnati, Ohio, grandson David, Mark and Stephen Myers, and Bill, Mark, Brian and Steve Nester, 3 great grand-daughters, and a sister, Dorothy Brooks of Miami. Funeral services will be held on December 29th at Van Orsdel Funeral Home, S.W. 8th St. Coral Gables, Florida.
