J.D. Austin Dies
Civil War Veteran Was at Gettysburg, Former Assessor of Sumner County.
J.D. Austin, who was one of the army who helped to turn the tide of the Civil War at Gettysburg, and later fought under General Rosecrans at Chickamauga, died Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Anderson, 129 North Washington avenue, Wichita, of pneumonia.
Mr. Austin was a soldier of the Seventy-Fourth Illinois, Company G. He served in the Union army for three years, and was in a number of the famous battles.
Mr. Austin was an old settler in Kansas, having settled on a farm in Sumner county, fifteen miles south of Mulvane, in 1872. About 20 years ago he moved to Udall. After the death of his wife, last October, he went to Wichita to live at the home of h is grand-daughter, Mrs. Alice Anderson, who had been reared in his home.
He was born in Champaign county, Ohio, in September 1831, on a farm. When the country was yet new he moved to Illinois and there lived on a farm.
For the past twenty years Mr. Austin has suffered from rheumatism, and at times has been almost an invalid with it. He had been ill with pneumonia for only a week.
Mr. Austin had always been much interested in politics, and was a staunch Republican. He served several times as county assessor of Sumner county.
He was a member of the Masonic lodge and of the Udall post, G.A.R. He had also been a member of the Methodist church for many years.
Mr. Austin is survived by five children. They are Mrs. A.A. Rucker of Mulvane; Mrs. J.H. Rucker of Mulvane; Mrs. J.H. Harrold, of Ponca City, Okla., Fred Austin, of Enid, Okla., and C.A. Austin of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The funeral services were held yesterday at three o'clock at the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Udall cemetery.
