Son of William Phillip Byrne and Katie Katherine Trahern Byrne. He married Marjorie Browder in 1935. He had six children with Alice Bessonnette, Tom "Shine" Gilbert, Jr., Phillip, Margie, Lois Jean, Jewell "Buddy" Clayton, and Mary. He and third wife Grace Pippin had one child, Patsy.
