Dr. Goen attended A&M Consolidated schools through the 10th grade. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan; however, because of the reshuffling of the school district when Carter Creek became the dividing line between College Station schools and Bryan schools.

Dr. Goen’s military service included service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and he was recalled as a reservist during the Korean War into the U.S. Air Force Medical Service as a Veterinary Officer. *US Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.

*Outstanding professional skill, knowledge, and leadership aided immeasurably in identifying problems associated with maintenance of proper military standards for food service establishments and in providing technical assistance needed to meet those standards.

While on active duty, he was stationed in Savannah, Georgie; Austin, Texas; Ramstein, Germany; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; Osan AFB, Korea, and McGuire AFB, New Jersey.

Dr. Goen was a Mason, a member of the Shrine and Sojourners. He served on the board of the Brazos County Farm Bureau for a term and he was a member and senior deacon of Bright Light Free Will Baptist Church, where he continued to serve until his death. He was also a Life Member of the American Legion Earl Graham Post 159.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Marcella Ruetz Goen; and his daughter, Karen Diane Goen, in 2010.
