Born on July 4, 1934 to parents Edwin and Helen Schmerse.

Passed away peacefully on November 1, 2016 surrounded by her loving children and granchildren.

She married the love of her life Robert Earl "Rebel" Smith in June 1953. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 48 years.

They are survived by their four children, Mary Alford of Sacramento, Cindy Mort (Tyler) of Elverta, Helyn Takemori-Peck (Gene) of Elk Grove, and Robert "Rusty" Smith (Ronda) of Placer-ville.

As family they loved to go camping, fishing, and four wheeling.

Mary loved her eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grand-children. She was her family's #1 cheerleader at all sporting events, school plays, scouts, etc.

Mary retired from the State of California (DMV) after twenty-one years of service. After retirement she enjoyed family time, gambling, bunco, traveling, and her "ladies" at Carefee Senior Community. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Please join the family in a celebration of Mary's life, Saturday January 14, 2017 from noon to 2 pm at Calvary Lutheran Church in the Parish Hall 515 L. Street, Rio Linda, CA 95673.
