US Congressman. He graduated from Yale in 1778, studied medicine and became a physician in Easthampton, Suffolk County, New York in 1784. In 1801 he moved to Sag Harbor, where he continued to practice medicine. In 1808 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican and served three terms, 1809 to 1815. He did not run for reelection in 1816. Sage carried on a wide correspondence with a number of friends and acquaintances. Many of his long, descriptive letters have been preserved and remain a primary contemporary source about how events during the War of 1812 affected Washington, DC and Long Island, New York. He ran for the US House again in 1820 and presented credentials of election, but James Guyon, Jr., successfully contested the results and was awarded the seat. Sage resumed practicing medicine in Sag Harbor, and in 1821 he was a Delegate to the New York Constitutional Convention. He was originally buried in Sag Harbor's Old Burying Ground, and was later reinterred at Oakland Cemetery.
