U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan in 1863, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Marshall, Michigan. He was Marshall City Attorney, (1864-65) and United States commissioner for the eastern district of Michigan, (1864-65). Moving to Iowa, he was commissioner of Iowa, (1865-75), city solicitor of Clinton, Iowa, in 1870 and district judge of the seventh judicial district of Iowa, (1875-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. After leaving Congress, he was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1897-98) and practiced of law until his death.
