U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States in 1843, he settled in Evansville, Indiana, became president of a cotton mill and founded a machine shop for the manufacture of drills in 1847. He was a member of the Evansville City Council, (1852-65), a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1870-76) and served in the Indiana State Senate, (1876-79). In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his former business activities until his death.
