Continental Congressman. A member of a Maryland family prominent in Queen Anne's and Talbot Counties, Hemsley owned and operated the family estate, Clover Fields Farm, near Queenstown. In 1773 he was appointed Provincial Treasurer for Maryland's Eastern Shore and Talbot County Surveyor. During the Revolution he supplied the Continental Army with flour and other supplies, and in 1777 became Colonel of the Queen Anne's County Militia's Twentieth Battalion and county Justice of the Peace. From 1779 to 1781 he served in the Maryland Senate. He served in the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783. Hemsley served in the State Senate again in 1786, 1790, and 1800, while continuing to operate Clover Fields Farm.
