U.S. Senator, Illinois Governor. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1792, studied law, was admitted to the bar and was a founding political figure of the State of Illinois. He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1796-97), judge of the general court of Kentucky in 1803, judge of the circuit court in 1804, judge of the court of appeals 1806, chief justice of the Illinois State, in 1808 and Governor of the Territory of Illinois, (1809-18). Upon the admission of Illinois as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1818-24), when he resigned being appointed Minister to Mexico, in 1824. In 1826, he was elected as a Democratic-Republican the 3rd Governor of Illinois, serving until 1831. After leaving office, he retired from public service and was in mercantile pursuits until his death from a disease at age 58.
