US Territorial Governor. He moved to California during the Gold Rush and served in its State Legislature 1854 to 1856 and 1860 to 1861, with a stint as Speaker in 1860. He later served the Idaho Territorial Council from 1866 to 1868 and again from 1876 to 1878. Stevenson was Territorial Governor of Idaho for President Grover Cleveland in 1885. In 1894 he unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Idaho and soon after returned to California.
