U.S. Congressman. He served, as corporal, in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. He had limited formal education as a child, but after the war, he attended law school, admitted to the bar in 1850, and practiced in Marshall, Illinois. As a Democrat, he was elected to the Thirty-sixth, Thirty-seventh, and Thirty-eighth United States Congresses serving from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1865. He served as a chairman of the Committee on Mileage in his last two terms. He did not seek re-election in 1864, but ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Governor of Illinois against Republican Richard James Oglesby. After the election, he continued his practice of law in Marshall; he relocated the practice to Springfield in 1869. He was elected to the Forty-second and Forty-third United States Congresses serving from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875. He did not seek re-election in 1874, but retired to his law practice. He served in Congress for a total of ten years. Just before his death in 1886, he was appointed to the Illinois Board of Livestock Commissioners.
