World War II United States Navy Officer. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1927 and became a Naval Aviator. In 1942, operating from the carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6), he was a Lieutenant Commander and Commanding Officer of Torpedo Squadron Six (VT-6), during the Battle of Midway. While leading his aircraft in an attack on the Japanese carrier Kaga, ten out of fourteen planes were downed and he was killed in action. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross Medal for his contribution to this great American victory. His actions were portrayed in the 1976 movie, "Midway" and the destroyer "USS Lindsey" (DD-771), was named in his honor.
