U.S. Congressman. Moving to Vermont, in 1790, he served as a Sergeant in the US Army, in the Indian War of 1793. After the war, he published several works of poems, was clerk of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1801-03), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1803 and commenced to practice law in Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1803, he was elected as a Federalist to the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Congresses, serving until 1809. After his term, he published a newspaper in Philadelphia and served as a US Army Captain during the War of 1812. Returning to Vermont, he resumed the practice of law, was clerk of the Windham County Court, (1817-35) and a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1818-19). He was register of the probate court, (1822-34), again served in the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1837-38) and Attorney of Windham County, from 1837, until his death at age 64.
