Major League Baseball Player. After graduating from Phillips High School in Birmingham, Frederic William Sington went to the University of Alabama as a promising football player. He was an All-American tackle for three consecutive years (1928-30). He was a Phi Beta Kappa student and garnered virtually every academic and athletic award during his undergraduate years at Alabama. Following graduation, he was an assistant football coach at Duke, then switched to professional baseball. He played six years in the major leagues as an outfielder, from 1934 to 1937 with the Washington Senators and 1938 and 1939 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. His career batting average was .271 with a total of seven home runs. He was a lieutenant j.g. in the Navy during World War II. After the war he established a chain of sporting good stores in Alabama. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Southern Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. In 1976 he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Alabama. He was widely regarded for his civic service.
