Born and christened in Hambach, Pfalz, Bavaria, Bernhard came to the U.S. from Bavaria with his father on board the steamship Robert L. Lane, arriving in New Orleans. Presumably he traveled by river boat to Hermann, MO, where he lived from 1855 until 1880, when he followed his brother Henry to Howell County and settled near White Church, MO in 1881. They were told that a white Methodist church along the trail would be a marker to this good land. Bernhard settled near this white church, as had Henry. Both brothers and their families were instrumental in establishing the Catholic church in White Church, Missouri.
He enlisted twice with the Union forces in the Civil War, serving as a private, first in Captain F. Pahde's command, 1st Battalion, Gasconade County Regiment, Home Guards Volunteer Company E. He next served in the Infantry Command, 34th Regiment, Company L. In his disability pension application he was described as 5 ft. 9 in., with fair complexion, black hair and brown eyes.
In Hermann he married Emilie Steiger, and they became the parents of eight children, Edward, Rosa, Molly, Henry, Ben, Tillie, Bertha and Mike.
His grave stone shows the anglicized version of his name, Bernard.
