US Congressman. He graduated from Auburn University in 1954 and served in the Navy from 1954 to 1956. He then began a career as an insurance agent in Birmingham with the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. Active in the Republican party, the John Birch Society, and the conservative Christian community, he was a Delegate to the Republican national conventions of 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1984. In 1978 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the US House of Representatives. In 1980 he was the successful Republican nominee for a seat in the US House, unseating the more moderate incumbent Republican John Buchanan, and serving one term, 1981 to 1983. Smith was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1982, and in 1984 he was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for US Senator, losing to incumbent Howell Heflin. He later served as a member of the advisory board of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, was a member of the Federal Council on the Aging, and was a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention.
