Body Believed to be in Sunken Sloop in New York Bay.
The body of Captain Bert Baldwin, a former resident of Keyport, who is believed to have drowned when his sloop "Sergeant", sank during a severe wind storm several weeks ago, has not been recovered. The services of a diver were unsuccessful owing to the fact that the diver was unable to gain entrance to the sloop cabin.
The boat is submerged in about twenty-five feet of water in lower New York Bay, with only a portion of the mast visible. It is assumed that Captain Baldwin had entered the cabin to start the engine, which other boatmen who passed him earlier in the day, said was not running. According to information given out by the captain's brother, it is thought that the squall struck the sloop while the captain was in the cabin and that he was trapped.
Another diver is expected to begin work shortly and it is felt by relatives of Captain Baldwin that if the door of the cabin can be opened the body will be found.
Captain Baldwin has been missing since he left Belford bound for his home at Belle-Air, near College Point, L.I. He was about fifty years old.
