Mary Elizabeth Wright Boyd, daughter of the late Reverend Washington Irving Wright Sr. and Susie Anna Wright, was called from labor to reward early on the morning of December 23, 2008, at her place of residence in Burlington City, New Jersey, where she lived with her niece Suzanne.
Mary was born in Florence, NJ and received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at an early age at St. Paul's Baptist Church in Florence. Later, she united with the Second Baptist Church of Burlington, NJ (where her father was Pastor) the now Christ Baptist Church where the Reverend Frederick C. Johnson was her Pastor.
Mary (fondly called 'Chubby'), was briefly wed to Robert Parrish and this union was blessed with the birth of her first son, Phillip Warren Parrish. She was then married to the late Blake Thomas O'Farrow Sr. and from their union Blake Thomas O'Farrow Jr. was born. She was later married to the late James Boyd (aka 'Shortie') with whom she shared many years.
Worthy of note is the fact that when Chubby was housed in the Care One facility located in Moorestown, NJ during a lengthy recuperation in 2006, it was her joy on the first Sunday of each month to see "her deacons" (as she referred to them) so smartly dressed and the envy of all that saw them in their black suits and red ties. They had come to give her communion, and she was proud to respond when the question was posed to her- "Who are those men?"
Chubby graduated from Burlington Senior High School. It is interesting that she was a black 'Rosie the Riveter', during WWII she made airplane wings in a factory located in Bristol, PA. She was known for her quiet intelligence- she was a smart lady! In spite of the hindrances at hand, Mary passed a state exam which qualified her for a position within the state of NJ. When the State of N.J. integrated its workforce, she passed another exam that qualified her to work in the Department of Taxation, Division of Inheritance. Mary worked in that department for 22 years where she retired as a supervisory clerk. Governor Brendon Byrne honored her with a certificate of appreciation for loyalty and devotion to duty.
All who knew Chubby recall how she loved to read, do crossword puzzles, and travel. We remember how she made a point to travel for her birthday each year for as long as she was able. She visited three continents. She had an insatiable appetite for reading and to keep her extensive vocabulary fresh, she subscribed to every crossword publication known to man.
Along with other attributes she could really sing and she had a great sense of humor. Those who knew her best knew Chubby was also an accomplished Jazz pianist, and an aficionado of gorgeous hats and fine clothing. She was also a connoisseur of the finest chocolates! Chubby was extremely excited to cast her vote from her wheelchair for our new President Obama.
She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: Phillip Parrish, of PA; and Blake T. O'Farrow, of VA and two grandchildren, Andrea Parrish of VA and Blake (Tre) O'Farrow III, of GA.; her devoted nieces Reverend Sandra Crump, Reverend Hilda Covington, Suzanne Woodard, and a nephew Washington Irving Wright, III, and a host of great nieces, nephews, and other devoted relatives and friends. Two "joys" of her life were her great great nieces, Makayla & Mya.
We who knew her and loved her best will always remember her dry wit and her infectious laughter. Chubby was unparalleled as a devoted mother and a loving aunt who was also a gracious and elegant woman of God.
