Roman Emperor. He was born in 130 AD and at age 7 was adopted along with Marcus Aurelius as a son and heir of the Emperor Hadrian. His first post was as quaestor in 153, and he was later made consul in 154 AD and 161 AD. After the death of Antoninus Pius in 161 AD Marcus Aurelius became Emperor, but he named Verus as his co-ruler, giving him command of the armies. From 162 until 166 he fought a campaign against the Parthian Empire, during which he captured western Mesopotamia and added it to the Empire. On his return to Rome he was awarded a triumph and given the title "Armeniacus". He spent the next two years in Rome, surrounding himself with actors and favourites, throwing parties, and attending chariot races. In 168 AD he was sent to repel invaders on the Danube border, and while on the return journey to Rome in 169 AD he fell ill with food poisoning and soon died. Marcus Aurelius ordered games in his memory and he was deified by the senate.
