Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he graduated from West Point in 1860 and was commissioned an officer in the US Artillery. During the Civil War, he was most noted for being Captain in command of Battery M, the 2nd US Artillery at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. He served in the Regular Army until 1899, when he retired as a General.
