Professional Hockey Player. He played at the goaltender position for nine seasons (1954 to 1956, 1960 to 1968) in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, serving as a backup for Al Rollins and Terry Sawchuk. He was a member of the Penguins' team during their league debut season of 1967-1968. In 156 career regular season NHL games, he compiled a record of 46 wins, 66 losses and 31 ties. In addition, Bassen played in both the AHL and WHL. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Goaltender Award in 1960, while with the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL. Following his playing career, he coached the Calgary Wranglers of the Western Hockey League from 1985 to 1986. His son Bob Bassen was a longtime professional hockey player in the NHL. He died of a heart attack.
