Katharina was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia to the later King Frederick I of Württemberg (Friedrich I. von Württemberg) and Duchess Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Auguste von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel). At age 5, her mother died and her father married her mother's first cousin Charlotte, Princess Royal, eldest daughter of British King George III. Katharina married Napoleon's brother on August 22, 1807 in the Palace Fontainebleau at Versailles, near Paris. She was his second wife and queen consort of the Kingdom of Westphalia. When the kingdom was dissolved after the downfall of the Napoleonic Empire she followed her husband into exile. She died in Lausanne/Switzerland at the age of 52.
