Herbert J. Mitchell, 71, husband of Mrs. Mary Werthmann Mitchell, of 1301 First Avenue, Conway, Beaver County, PA, died Tuesday, October 4, 1955 at 9:04 a.m. in the Sewickley Valley Hospital, where he had been a patient since September 28. Friends were received at the Gross Funeral Home, Freedom, Beaver County, PA. The body was removed to the Conway Methodist Church, Conway, Beaver County, PA, to lie in state until the funeral service. Mr. Mitchell had been in ill health for eight years. The obit reported his birth taking place in Waverly, WV, June 7, 1890. However, his Registration Card for the military stated he was born in White Oak, Boone County, West Virginia, USA, on June 7, 1884. The headstone is dated 1884 and coincides with the Pennsylvania 1910 Census Miracode Index, which states he was born in Ohio. He had been a resident of Conway for 32 years. Prior to his illness, he was employed by the A.M. Byers Company, Ambridge. He was a member of the Conway Methodist Church. His widow, two daughers (Mercedes Chop and Vera Wehr), one granddaughter (Carole M. Chop), and one brother (Arthur E. Mitchell), Middletown, Butler, OH, survived him. He was preceded in death by his only grandson, Robert Vincent "Porky" Chop. His pastor, Rev. Raymond DeLong, officiated. Herbert's parents were Sam (Smiley) B. Mitchell and Sidney Anne (Anna) Gault. The Pennsylvania 1910 Census Miracode Index listed him as being 25, White, born in Ohio, residing in Rochester, PA, Beaver County, PA. He was then a boarder in the household of George H. Boehm. Herbert J. Mitchell and Mary Werthmann were married on 7 Sep 1915 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA. My grandmother wrote me a note that he had a sister, Bertha Mitchell. His aunt was Ellen Malone married to George Malone. The Malones had five children: Ore, Edith, Roe, Clyde, and Elsie, all in Marietta, Ohio. My grandfather had two cousins: Addie Gault Kress in Rochester, PA, and Dorie Gault Davidson in New Brighton, PA. Dewie Gault lived in Rochester, PA. Gertrude Gault, Rochester, PA, went away to be a missionary.
