On August 16, 1920, in a game at New York, he threw a pitch that accidentally struck Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman in the head, causing the only fatality in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. He finished his career with a 207-126 record, 29 shutouts, 862 strikeouts and a 2.92 earned run average.
