Rhythm and Blues Singer. His career began onstage at the famous Apollo Theater in 1954 when he won a talent contest and secured a recording contract. While he struggled early in his career he honed his song writing talent. He wrote many hits in the mid to late 60s. Following the successful "I Gotcha" in 1972 he chose to retire. He returned in 1975 with the irrepressible "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)". By the 1980s he had withdrawn again from full-time performing. Also known as Yusef Harriez after converting to Muslim religion.
