Civil War Union Brigadier General, Minnesota Governor. After serving as a Colonel in the 4th Indiana during the Mexcian American War, he established a law practice in Bloomington. In 1853, President Franklin Pierce appointed him the second Territorial Governor of Minnesota serving until 1857 and was a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, 1857 to 1859. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel in command of the 1st Minnesota Infantry and served in the First Battle of Bull Run. In September 1861, he was promoted Brigadier General and was assigned to command a Brigade in the Army II Corps. He participated in the Peninsula Campaign, at the Battle of Antietam and commanded the District of Eastern Arkansas. After the war, he resumed legal practice, was elected City Attorney of St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1869 and served until his death.
