Lillian Maria Beazley Hubbard was born to Captain Harry Leslie Beazley Sr and Jennie Bullock Bryant Beazley on July 8th 1921. Her father died when Lillian was less than three months old, leaving her and her brother HL, to be raised by "Miss Jennie". Miss Jennie's brother, John Robert Bryant and the men in the neighborhood cleared a section of her timber and built a small home for the widow Jennie and her two children The home stood across the field behind Magnolia Baptist Church. She would live here until graduating from Stedman High School and then marrying Thurman James Hubbard, a boy she had known her whole life. They moved to Fayetteville, NC where Thurman went to work as a cook in the VA Hospital. It was here, their sons Thurman James Jr "Jimmy" and Robert Leslie "Bobby" were born in 1943 and 1944.
After World War II, Lillian's brother "HL" and his wife "Lib" and Thurman's brother, Lewis & his wife Emma, moved to Winston-Salem to work for the VA. Lewis went into a most successful real estate business and among the properties he acquired was a grocery store. Thurman, Lillian, their 2 boys and Lillian's mother, Miss Jennie all moved to Winston-Salem. The 'Sunnyside Superette' opened on Stockton Street in the Southside community. Thurman was the butcher and manager. Lillian handled accounts and cash registering. They soon built their home, around the corner on Patria St. It was a simple time of 'cross the fence neighbors' and corner stores. The Hubbards sold their store in the mid 1950s and Lillian continued to work for the new owners until her last child, Jeffrey Lee "Jeff" was born. She would stay home for a decade to care for her boys and family.
In the mid 1960s Lillian became one of the earliest - Special Education Aides - she would work for the state for over 20 years. She dearly loved her job and the special children that grew up calling her "MaMa". During these years she cared for her bedridden mother, Miss Jennie until her death at home in 1984. Upon learning that Thurman had terminal cancer, she retired and cared for her precious husband until he died at home in 1987. After Thurman's death, Lillian substituted and worked at the Enrichment Center for Special Needs Children into her 70s.
As she approached her 80s Lillian moved in with her son, Jimmy and then the last two years with Jeff. She had to suffer the loss of her son, Bobby, in 2007. Late in the evening of August 3rd 2009, she died at home holding Jeff's hand.
Lillian spent her whole life in service to others. All of her family and numerous friends were fortunate indeed if they experienced her good cooking and hospitality. She didn't just wear her Southern Baptist faith - she lived it! She made friends easily and had a heart of pure gold. She loved her children, grandchildren, family and friends unconditionally, always putting other's interest ahead of her own.
She loved her hometown of Stedman and Magnolia Baptist Church. Her earthly remains now rest within sight of Magnolia, beside her precious Thurman, her parents and grandparents. Her spirit with Christ!
