Ithaca, N.Y., April 19. – Cleveland Abbe Jr., scientist and editor of scientific publications, died of heart disease yesterday. He was 62 years old. Funeral services will be held at his home here Saturday afternoon, with burial in Lake View Cemetery.
Since 1930, Mr. Abbe was scientific editor of volumes of the George F. Baker Non-Resident Lectureship in Chemistry at Cornell. His career included the editorship of The Monthly Weather Review of the United States Weather Bureau and he had been associate editor of The Scientific American Supplement in New York and of The Engineering and Mining Journal.
He studied at Harvard, John Hopkins, and the Imperial University of Vienna and taught in Western Maryland College and at the City College in New York.
He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Miss Elfriede Martha Abbe, one son, Dr. Ernst Cleveland Abbe of Columbia University, and one brother, Dr. Truman Abbe of Washington, D.C., a physician.

Cleveland Abbe Jr., 62, of 123 Quarry Street, scientific editor of volumes of the George F. Baker non-resident lectureship in chemistry at Cornell since 1930, died at the Tompkins County Memorial Hospital yesterday [18 Apr 1934] afternoon of heart disease.
Mr. Abbe was crossing the campus shortly before 3 o’clock when he collapsed against a tree. Raymond Grant of 129 Waite Avenue, passing by in a car, stopped to aid Mr. Abbe.
Mr. Abbe was born in Washington, D. C., on Mar. 25, 1872. He attended Harvard University, receiving his A.B. degree in 1891, and two years later his A.M. degree from the same university. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Johns Hopkins College in 1898. He also studied at the Imperial University at Vienna. On Apr. 12, 1903, he married Frieda Dauer of Brunswick, Germany.
Before going abroad, Mr. Abbe was instructor in physiography at the Corcoran Scientific School at Columbia from 1894 to 1897 and was professor in geology and biology at Western Maryland College from 1898 to 1899.
Served in Weather Bureau
On his return from Europe, he served in the United States Geological survey from 1903 to 1906, and was research observer for the United States Weather Bureau from 1906 to 1934. He edited the monthly Weather Review, served as an assistant in the library of the United States Weather Bureau.
In 1919, Mr. Abbe was associate editor in charge of the Scientific American Supplement in New York City, and later became assistant editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal. He was assistant professor in the College of the City of New York from 1921 to 1935.
He was a member of the American Geological Society.
Besides his widow, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Freida Martha Abbe; one son, Dr. Ernst C. Abbe of Columbia University, and one brother, Dr. Truman Abbe of Washington, D. C.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Apr. 21, at the family home, 123 Quarry Street. The Rev. Leslie T. Pennington, pastor of the Unitarian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Lake View Cemetery.
