Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Minnesota Governor. Born in Columbia, Missouri, he moved to Minnesota 1849, where he established successful businesses in the banking, newspaper and dairy farms. He also served as a member of the Minnesota Territorial House of Representatives (1849-50). With the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in the Union Army and was soon appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Regiment, Minnesota Infantry. Promoted to Colonel of the 7th Regiment, Minnesota Infantry in November 1863, he fought in the Battle of Nashville, Mobile, Alabama and at the Battle of Fort Blakely. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was a elected as a Republican the 5th Governor of Minnesota and served (1866-70). After leaving office, he served as the State railroad and warehouse commissioner, (1874-82). He died at age 70 in Pasadena, California.
