Israeli President. He was an Irish-born Israeli politician, military figure, lawyer and author, becoming, along with several other family members, an outstanding figure in modern Jewish history. As the 6th President of Israel, he served two terms between 1983 and 1993. Born into a family of generations of scholarly rabbis, he received an Orthodox Jewish education before attending Wesley College. After his family immigrated to British-controlled Mandatory Palestine in 1935, he earned a degree in law from the University of London in 1941. He supported the 1936 to 1939 Arab Revolt in Palestine against the British. During World War II, he served in the British army as the head of intelligence in northern Germany. In 1948, he served as an officer in Israel's War of Independence, serving in the Military Intelligence Branch from 1948 to 1950, and again in 1959 to 1962. From 1950 to 1954 he served as defense attaché in Washington, D.C. Retiring from the army in 1962 at the rank of major-general, he entered a career in business and law, becoming a partner in one of Israel's largest law firms. In 1967 he became one of the leading military commentators on Israeli radio and authoring in 1978 the first of six books on military history. He served as Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations from 1975 to 1978, opposing the "Zionism is Racism" resolution. Although he had been politically outspoken most of his life, he entered politics as a candidate on the Labor ticket to the Israeli Parliament, serving after being elected from 1981 to 1983 before becoming the sixth President of Israel. He married and had four children. His son, Isaac "Bougie" Herzog, was elected as the 11th President of Israel, thus they were the first father-son Israeli Presidents to serve.
