US Senator. He graduated from the University of Oregon at Eugene, then from the law department of Washington and Lee University Virginia, in 1893 and commenced to practice law in Eugene, Oregon. He served as District Attorney of Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lake Counties, Oregon, (1900-08). He also was a part owner of the Deep Gravel Mining Company and president of Three Pines Timber Company. On February 1, 1938, he was appointed by Oregon Governor Charles H. Martin as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Frederick Steiwer and served until November 8, 1938. Not seeking to run for reelection, he returned to private law practice and was responsible for the construction of the Jacksonville City power plant.
