US Congressman, Confederate Congressman. Elected to represent South Carolina's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1857 to 1860. Also served as Mayor of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1855, Delegate from South Carolina to the Confederate Provisional Congress from 1861 to 1862, and Representative from South Carolina in the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1865.
