Alabama Governor, U.S. Senator. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1819 and opened a practice in Claiborne, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1821-22, 24, 34-36) and also a member of the Alabama State Senate, in 1825. In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat the 10th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1841. After his term, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Clement C. Clay, serving (1841-48). He then was appointed Minister to Russia, (1848-49) and later a member of the commission to codify the State laws of Alabama, in 1852.
