U.S. Congressman, Alabama Governor. He attended the Academy of Virginia, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in Somerville, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama State Senate, (1832-35). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and as a Democrat to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1847. After his term, he was elected as a Democrat the 13th Governor of Alabama, serving (1847-49). While in office, he established effective financial procedures that offset the damage that was done to the state's economy. He then was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1855, a delegate to the Democratic Convention at Baltimore in 1860 and was a representative of the Confederacy to France, (1862-65). Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 82.
