Belgian Journalist and Politician. He studied to be a teacher at the Antwerp Municipal Normal School and also worked evenings for the socialist party newspaper Volksgazet. After obtaining his diploma, he started working at the Volksgazet as a journalist and editorial secretary. As a journalist, he was known for his harsh criticisms and attacks on political opponents. When party chairman Hendrik de Man dissolved the Belgian Workers Party at the start of the Second World War in May 1940, he presented to him a plan to publish one large socialist magazine for the Flemish regions in order to remain in possession of the printing presses. His intention failed, however, after which he became active in the underground press as editor of the cover magazine De Werker. After the liberation, he became editor-in-chief of the Volksgazet in 1944 where he stayed until 1977 and also became director of the newspaper. From 1964 to 1977, he was managing director of Uitgeverij Development, the publisher of the Volksgazet. From 1945 to 1975, he was the chairman of the Belgian Socialist Party of the Antwerp district and from 1946 to 1977, he was a member of the Chamber of Representatives for the Antwerp electoral district. From December 1971 to April 1977, he was also a member of the Cultural Council for the Dutch Cultural Community which was installed on December 7, 1971 and is the distant precursor of the Flemish Parliament. He was also the chairman of the Belgian Socialist Party department in Berchem where he was a municipal councilor from 1959 to 1976. From 1954 to 1971 he was also vice-president of the Belgian Socialist Party. From 1971 to 1975 he was co-party chairman of the Belgian Socialist Party and was appointed Minister of State in 1969.
