Businessman. Born in London, England, he was a grocer who founded the popular British Tesco Store chain. After serving in World War I, in the Royal Air Corps, he established himself as a market stall holder in London and soon was owner of a number of market stalls, plus started a whole sale business. In 1924, he created the Tesco brand name which distributed market products. By 1931, he had a few Tesco stores opened and with their success, he owned a hundred Tesco stores by 1939. Tesco grew strongly and he expanded his company with mergers, making it the fourth largest siore chain in the United Kingdom by 1968. For his achievements, he was Knighted Sir Cohen in 1969. He stepped down as chairman of Tesco and retired in 1969. He died at age 80 in London, England. In 2009, an English Heritage blue plaque was placed at his home at 91 Ashfield Street, London.
