Actor, Comedian, Talent Agent. Milton "Gummo" Marx was born in New York City and was the fifth son of Minnie and Sam Marx. He joined his brothers Julius "Groucho" and Adolph "Harpo" in 1911 to become the vaudeville singing troupe the Three Nightingales. (He also appeared earlier in his Uncle Julius' ventriloquism act.) When brother Leonard "Chico" joined the group, they became the Four Marx Brothers, with Gummo playing the straight role. (He was nicknamed Gummo by monologist Art Fisher because of his penchant for rubber shoes.) Gummo left the group in 1917 to join the U.S. Army during World War I; he was replaced by baby brother Herbert "Zeppo." Gummo started a dress-making business that eventually went bankrupt. Afterward, he became his brothers' agent and even went into show business management with brother Zeppo when the latter quit the team in 1933. Gummo was considered the most responsible brother, whether it was taking care of the wayward Chico's finances or handling a family member's funeral. Gummo is entombed next to his wife Helen, and across the hallway from elder brother Chico.
